Parking an Audi A3 in an underground car park or choosing between the Sportback and Sedan for everyday use means knowing its actual dimensions, not just the length listed on a sales spec sheet. Measurements vary by several centimetres depending on the body style, powertrain and even model year, which can make all the difference when manoeuvring in a tight space.
Width including mirrors and turning circle: what really matters when parking
Most spec sheets list the width excluding mirrors. On the current Sportback (generation 8Y), this measurement is 1,816 mm. With the mirrors unfolded, it increases to 1,984 mm, or almost two metres.
At 1.98 m wide with the mirrors included, the remaining clearance on either side of a standard parking space is considerably reduced. In a space bordered by a wall or pillar, opening the doors becomes a precision exercise.
To assess the length of the Audi A3 in real-world conditions, always check whether the stated width includes the mirrors. Audi’s spec sheets clearly distinguish between the two measurements, but online comparison sites do not always use the wider figure.
The Sedan and Allstreet have an overall width very close to that of the Sportback, excluding mirrors. So the choice of body style makes little difference to the car’s lateral footprint. The differences become more noticeable in length.

Audi A3 dimensions: Sportback, Sedan and Allstreet comparison table
For a clearer picture, here are the dimensions of the three 8Y-generation body styles, as listed in the available technical specifications.
| Version | Length | Width (excluding mirrors) | Width (including mirrors) | Height |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A3 Sportback | 4,343 to 4,352 mm | 1,816 mm | 1,984 mm | 1,440 mm |
| A3 Sedan | 4,504 mm | 1,816 mm | 1,984 mm | 1,440 mm |
| A3 Allstreet | close to Sportback | close to Sportback | close to Sportback | around +30 mm vs Sportback |
The Sedan is around 15 cm longer than the Sportback. This is the most significant difference between the two body styles. The Allstreet has a similar footprint to the Sportback, but is a few centimetres taller thanks to its raised suspension and specific tyres.
Why length varies by powertrain
One detail that’s often overlooked: some Sportback spec sheets list a length of 4,343 mm, while others give 4,352 mm. This difference of a few millimetres depends on the version (petrol, diesel or hybrid) and trim level, which can affect the bumper design.
Before comparing two A3s, check the powertrain and model year. A petrol 35 TFSI and a diesel 35 TDI from the same generation may not have exactly the same length down to the millimetre.
Audi A3 in a standard garage: the dimensions that really matter
At 4.35 m (Sportback) or 4.50 m (Sedan), the A3 fits lengthwise in the vast majority of single garages. Width is what needs attention.
Width is the main sticking point. With the mirrors unfolded, the car is 1.98 m wide, leaving around 50 cm of clearance in a 2.50 m-wide garage. Folding the mirrors (an electric function available depending on trim) reduces the width to around 1.82 m, freeing up an extra 30 cm or so on each side.
- Sportback in a narrow garage: its length of under 4.36 m leaves plenty of room in front and behind, but remember to fold the mirrors to move around the car
- Sedan in a narrow garage: its 4.50 m length leaves less room at the rear, especially if the garage is also used for storage
- Allstreet: its slightly greater height may be an issue under a low gate or a sectional garage door with limited clearance
The turning circle also makes a practical difference. In an underground car park with tight turns, a 4.35 m compact car is easier to manoeuvre than a 4.50 m sedan, even if the difference seems modest on paper.

Wheelbase and rear passenger space: what exterior dimensions don’t tell you
The 8Y-generation A3 has a wheelbase of 2,630 mm, regardless of body style. This distance between the axles directly determines rear legroom.
With a 2.63 m wheelbase, the A3 offers decent rear space for two adults. The Sedan does not provide more legroom than the Sportback: its extra 15 cm of length benefits the boot, not the passengers.
Boot capacity by body style
The Sportback has a boot capacity of around 335 litres. Thanks to its longer boot, the Sedan offers more space. For family use with a pushchair or suitcases, the Sedan has the advantage. For everyday city driving, the Sportback’s tailgate makes it easier to load bulky items, despite its slightly smaller capacity.
Plug-in hybrid versions (e-hybrid, particularly the 40 TFSI e) sacrifice some boot space to accommodate the battery. Check the actual usable capacity in the specifications for your chosen powertrain, rather than relying on the model’s general spec sheet.
Choosing between the Sportback, Sedan and Allstreet means weighing up overall length, height and loading practicality. Their exterior widths are very similar. Length and height are what make the difference in everyday use, especially when parking or garage dimensions impose their own constraints.
